Bemelmans Bar
35 E 76th St, New York, NY 10021, USA
Gold leaf ceilings, leather banquettes, and Ludwig Bemelmans murals give this Carlyle lounge a rare sense of New York ceremony. Open since 1947, the walls are painted with scenes from the Madeline books, created in exchange for an 18 month stay at the hotel, and they remain his only intact public murals. Live music runs seven nights a week, and Emmy Award winning pianist and composer Earl Rose is one of its best known regulars. It has long drawn socialites and visiting stars, with Carlyle lore even linking it to Marilyn Monroe and John F. Kennedy.
